National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Undersecretary Adoracion Navarro led the Philippine Delegation to the 73rd Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) on 15-19 May 2017. The 73rd Session of the Commission was convened under the theme “Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Energy.”

In the country statement, Undersecretary Navarro highlighted the “Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022” which is anchored on the “Ambisyon Natin 2040” and the Sustainable Development Goals. She shared Philippine initiatives on disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, statistical development, energy security, and infrastructure development. She also shared the priorities and initiatives of the Philippines as Chair of the ASEAN in 2017.

The Philippine Delegation to the 73rd Session of the UNESCAP participated in the deliberations on the work of the UNESCAP and related regional institutions on statistics, information and communications technology, transport, and social development, among others. A booth on the Philippine Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2017 was also set up to showcase thematic priorities and initiatives of the Philippine Government.

UNESCAP is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region, composed of 53 Member States and 9 Associate Members. The overall objective of ESCAP is to promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region, with priority accorded to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
