The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok invites all to join in the commemoration of the 8th World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) on 06 April 2015.  The April 2 worldwide commemoration of the WAAD was reset in reverence to time-honored tradition of the observance of the Lenten Season in the Philippines.  The symbolic ceremony thru the holding of a Light-It-Up Blue (LIUP) of edifices, landmarks, monuments, churches, schools including homes, and other related infrastructures will be held from 6:00 o’clock to 7:00 o’clock in the evening of 06 April 2015.

The United Nations (UN) adopted this year the theme “Employment:  The Autism Advantage” owing to the result of the research done by the UN that employers are missing out on abilities that that people on the autism spectrum have in greater abundance than “neurotypical” workers do – such as, heightened abilities in pattern recognition and logical reasoning, as well as a greater attention to detail. UN global research also revealed that more than 80% of adults with autism are unemployed.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted on December 18, 2007 resolution 62/139 declaring April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) to give voice to the millions of individuals worldwide who are undiagnosed, misunderstood, and looking for help to improve their lives so they can lead full and meaningful lives.  The Day’s observance would shine a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis.
