On 19 October 2014, a team from the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok headed by Ambassador Jocelyn Batoon-Garcia conducted mobile consular services for the more than one-hundred fifty (150) Filipinos living and working in Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand. Out of the total Filipino population in the province, more than 120 are working as teachers in public schools.
The team rendered passports, legalization and other consular services, and also registered qualified Filipinos for Overseas Absentee Voting. It also held a dialogue to address some of the community member’s concerns. Ambassador Batoon-Garcia introduced Mr. Agkarajit Phanomvan Na Ayudhya as the new Philippine Honorary Consul in Chiang Mai, with concurrent jurisdiction over the provinces of Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Nan, and Uttaradit.
Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand. It is bordered by Myanmar to the north, Bokeo Province of Laos to the east, and the Thai provinces of Phayao to the south, Lampang to the southwest, and Chiang Mai to the west.
