UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK, 30 September 2021 – Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand Don Pramudwinai reaffirmed the excellent Philippines-Thailand bilateral relations, and explored ways to further strengthen the partnership in a meeting held on 23 September 2021 at the sidelines of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Secretary Locsin and Minister Pramudwinai discussed matters of mutual interest such as trade, Myanmar, the AUKUS Trilateral Security Partnership, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
On AUKUS, Secretary Locsin noted that “ASEAN should ensure that this new security arrangement would complement, not supplant, the ASEAN-centered regional security architecture that we have built.” Minister Pramudwinai for his part, said that ASEAN can provide a “safe and neutral environment” for all parties concerned, and that there is a need to adopt a “new mindset or paradigm for peace and security in the region.”
The two ministers expressed the hope for the convening of the 6th Meeting of the Philippines-Thailand Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) in 2022. END
