First Secretary and Consul Michael Lyndon B. Garcia and Second Secretary and Consul Beatriz Ines L. Herrera-Davila participated in the 10th Celebration of Silk: Thai Silk Road to the World (Grand Fashion Extravaganza), which was held at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall on 06 December 2020. They modelled a modern barong and a baro-saya-patadyong ensemble with butterfly sleeves in Thai silk, which were created by Thai student designers of the Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon, under the guidance of their teachers and design recommendations of the two Filipino diplomats.
A total of 100 nations were represented on the runway by Ambassadors and their spouses and children, as well as other embassy and consular officials and personnel. Fashion design students from 70 universities and vocational colleges across the Kingdom were also invited to design and execute different national costumes in Thai silk.
The fashion show has been staged annually since 2010 in honor of Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother for her role in promoting the use of Thai silk locally and globally. It also formed part of a week-long series of activities this year commemorating the birth anniversary of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, which is also Thailand’s National Day and Father’s Day.
Prime Minister and Madame Prayut Chan-o-cha, other Thai government ministers and officials, and society personalities graced the event. The National costumes worn by diplomat-models are slated to go on tour throughout Thailand until January 2021.
