Bangkok, 21 September 2019 - As part of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the Kingdom of Thailand, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand conducted an academic cultural event entitled “A Mini-Symposium on the 70 Years of Friendship”, in collaboration with The Siam Society Under Royal Patronage, on 21 September 2019 at the Siam Society building in Asoke, Bangkok.
Ms. Pikulkeaw Krairiksh, President of The Siam Society, Thai Senator and Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, formally opened the mini-symposium. Philippine Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mary Jo A. Bernardo-Aragon, then gave an overview of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Thailand from the signing in 1949 of the Treaty of Friendship between the two nations. Dr. Professor Piemsak Hongjamrassilp of Thammasat University followed this with a talk on contacts between Philippines and Thailand from a historical perspective, focusing mainly on Siam and Philippine relations during the XVI-XVIII centuries.
Notable guests include General Thawip Netniyom, Thai Senator and President of the Thailand-Philippines Parliamentarians Friendship Group, officials from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Thailand Post, members of the diplomatic corps, the academe, and the Filipino community. They all listened with enthusiasm as they discovered the shared history between Philippines and Thailand and how its relations developed up to the present.

Dr. Professor Piemsak Hongjamrassilp, Thammasat University specialist in the history of Spain in relation to the Philippines and Thailand, focused on the contacts between Philippines and Thailand from a historical perspective during the XVI-XVIII centuries.
