Ekstra, a story -within -a-story, centering around the 'shooting' of a melodramatic soap opera, was a cri t ical and commercial hit. It is funny, energetic, and moving, as it shows the highs and lows of 'bit players' or 'extras', in the field of entertainment. They stay on the sets from morning to evening, are herded like cattle from one set to another, have no idea what role they would play or when they would be ca lled on the sets, but they never lose sight of their dreams.

Variety magazine praised the film for "Maintaining the balance of comedy and heartfelt drama." It is this 'balance ' that accounts for the strength and enjoyment of th is vibrant socio-rea list drama, that won audiences at festiva ls around the world.

At the centre of the action is Loida Malabanan, sing le mother and bit player, who tries to do her best at every role she takes on, and also to cheer up all those around her.The role is marvelously played by Filipino screen queen Vilma Sa ntos, that won her many awards. What is most iron ic and interesting is how effortlessly t he famous actress plays the role of 'bit player' ~ a casting coup by well -known director Jeffrey Jethurian . The artistes who play the 'stars' in the soap opera, are also well -knowri Fi lipino sta rs, which further adds to the exciting allure of the film.

In order to celebrate this unique and popular film, the Ambassador of the Philippines, HEMs Jocelyn Batoon-Garcia will offer the famed Si=!n Miguel beer from her country, as also a bevy of loca l delicacies like pan sit noodles, lechon kawali pork, puto, and others.

Don't miss a memorable film, in our Contemporary World Film Series.
